1. Fast track clinic 

Patients suitable for referral to this clinic are those satisfying criteria under the "2 week rule":

  • Any woman with an abnormal gynaecological biopsy result
    • e.g. endometrial hyperplasia or carcinoma on an endometrial biopsy
  • Any post menopausal woman over 55 years not taking hormone replacement therapy with:
    • single heavy or repeated vaginal bleed in the Royal Sussex County Hospital area
    • any vaginal bleeding in the Princess Royal Hospital area
  • Any unexpected or prolonged bleeding persisting for more than 4 weeks after stopping HRT
  • A lesion suspicious of cancer on cervix or vaginal on speculum examination
  • A lesion suspicious of cancer on clinical examination of the vulva
  • A palpable mass not obviously fibroids
  • A suspicious pelvic mass on pelvic ultrasound
  • Postcoital bleeding age >35 years that persists for more than 4 weeks

There are two clinics per week:

At the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton

  • The clinic runs on a Wednesday afternoon in the Antenatal Clinic, on Level 11 of the Thomas Kemp Tower block

At the Princess Royal Hospital, Haywards Heath

  • The clinic runs on a Friday morning on Horsted Keynes Ward

2. Colposcopy clinic

Patients can be referred to this clinic:

  • Directly from the cytology service, with cytological abnormalities detected at routine smear testing
  • Directly from primary care where there is suspicion over a cervical lesion or abnormal smear result

Referrals are made by way of a standard referral letter. A partial booking system operated is in operation for these clinics.

There are five clinics per week:

At the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton

  • The clinics run on Tuesday and Friday mornings in the Gynaecology outpatient department on Eastern Road (opposite the main hospital)

At the Princess Royal Hospital, Haywards Heath

  • The clinics run on a Monday afternoon, Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday afternoon in the endoscopy suite on Horsted Keynes Ward

3. General gynaecology clinics

Patients suitable for referral to this clinic are:

  • Those women whose presenting complaints do not require referral to specialist clinics i.e. to fast track, colposcopy or fertility clinics
  • Those women with conditions that fall outside of the guidance on this site i.e. those with significant dyspareunia or pelvic pain
  • Those women who have failed to respond to or had averse reactions to therapies suggested in the guidance in these algorithms

Referrals are made by way of a standard referral letter. A partial booking system is in operation for these clinics.

There are 11 clinics per week:

At the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton

  • The clinics run on Monday morning, Tuesday all day, Wednesday morning, Thursday afternoon and Friday mornings in the Gynaecology outpatient department on Eastern Road (opposite the main hospital)

At the Princess Royal Hospital, Haywards Heath

  • The clinics run on a Monday morning, Wednesday all day and Thursday afternoon, in the Gynaecology outpatient department

At the Lewes Victoria Hospital, Lewes

  • The clinic runs on a Tuesday afternoon in the main outpatient department
