Where did the concept for the website come from?

The concept was born out of a gynaecological clinical reference group. This is a joint group involving Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust and the three local Primary Care Trusts: Brighton and Hove City PCT, Mid-Sussex PCT and Sussex Downs and Weald PCT. This group is chaired by Mr Tony Kelly, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist from the Royal Sussex County Hospital, who has also led the website development.

This group was charged with re-profiling local women's health services and part of this involved designing structured care pathways for common conditions. To improve dissemination of this information the website project was conceived.

In addition to the original content, patient information, contraceptive and termination service information was added by involving relevant stake holders. Further information and pathways will be added in time.

How were the algorithms and pathways produced?

The recommendations included in these algorithms and pathways are based on collated evidence derived from relevant national and local guidelines.

When tertiary evidence sources were not available, secondary and primary evidence sources were used. These evidence sources have been adapted for local use and reflect local needs. In addition all pathways were developed using group process and local peer review.

Who assisted in the funding and development of the site?

The project was initially funded by Schering Health Care Ltd. As a local company based in Sussex, they were keen to help start up a major health initiative such as this project. Although Schering products appear within some of the pathways, Schering have had no input into the pathways, and the views expressed are those of the NHS organisations alone.
